“Worshiping Jesus together may be the single most important thing we do. It plays an indispensable role in rekindling our spiritual fire, and keeping it burning.” – David Mathis
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday next week. Lent is the season in the Christian year leading up to Easter that we generally use for self-examination and repentance. It’s customary in some circles to give something up for Lent: meat, chocolate, television, etc. While this practice is valuable I want to suggest a different practice this Lent for the people called Methodists in Marion County.
Instead of giving up something let’s make Lent a season of re-commitment. We want to examine our lives, our habits, our attitudes, and our actions and commit to doing those positive things we know God calls us to do. The Greatest Commandment is Love God and Love Neighbor.
Love God first through worship. The weekly gathering of the people of God focused on loving God is the springboard for every other Christian commitment. Make a special effort to worship with the family of faith each Sunday and see how God rekindles your spiritual fire. We’re going to be making some changes in worship we believe will be meaningful and will help you connect to Christ.
Love your neighbor by showing your love. Too often our “love” for our neighbor is passive. We love by doing no harm. That’s good, but Jesus is proactive in loving. We’ll be suggesting ways to proactively love your neighbor through the season of Lent leading up to our celebration of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday.
This Lent re-commit yourself to Christ and watch the joy and hope you experience and how that influences the world around you.
