As I write, election results are still coming in, but the major news outlets have projected that Donald Trump has been re-elected as President of the United States. For some, this news brings joy; for others, it brings sorrow. You most likely know people on both sides of the political spectrum. My encouragement to you this morning is to hold them in prayer, especially those whose views differ from your own. Lift them up sincerely, seeing them as they are: persons created in the image of God. Though political opinions may vary, Jesus is Lord over all.
I also encourage you to seek out diverse sources of news. In today’s media landscape, it’s easy to find perspectives from different ideological backgrounds. Mainstream media leans Democratic, while much of the newer media is inclined toward the Republican view. By broadening our sources, we gain a fuller understanding of the issues and challenges we face. As Christians, let us remember that our ultimate allegiance is not to a political party, or even a nation, but to our Lord and His Kingdom.
Elections certainly have consequences, but let us remember that outcomes are rarely as ideal as the winners suggest, nor as dire as the defeated may fear. Leadership is consequential, but so are the choices each of us makes daily as citizens of this nation and members of Christ’s body. Let us earnestly pray for a renewed spiritual Awakening across the United States, that hearts would turn to the Lord, our God and King.
