The Hidden Danger of the “Normal” Life

Every day, in ways big and small, you’re choosing a path. Not once. Not in a single moment. But over time. And that path is shaping your life. You’re either headed toward a life of flourishing or a life of languishing.

The question is not if you’re choosing, but, which path are you on?

Scripture is remarkably consistent about this. Over and over again, the Bible teaches about the two ways. Scholars refer to this as the Two Ways Tradition.

Jesus said there is a narrow way that leads to life and a broad way that leads to destruction (Matthew 7:13–14).

Psalm 1 speaks of the path of the blessed whose life flourishes, and the path of the wicked whose life is lacking and fleeting and ultimately meaningless.

Through the prophet Jeremiah, God says: “I set before you the way of life and the way of death” (Jeremiah 21:8). Two ways. Two directions. Two sets of commitments. Two paths: formation and deformation. Two outcomes.

Let’s walk back through where we’ve been.

Choose

You’re not neutral—you’re already moving in a direction. Your life is headed somewhere. You have a choice. God gives us free will, and even choosing nothing—just drifting—is still a choice.

Walk

Your life is shaped by what you repeatedly do. Your habits help form your direction. And your direction forms, or deforms, your life. Step by step, day by day you’re becoming something. It’s helpful to reflect on the question, “Who am I becoming?”

Turn

What do you do when  you realize you’re on the wrong road? The most hopeful word in Scripture is: “turn.” You don’t have to be stuck. You are one turn away from a different trajectory. When God opens your eyes and you find yourself in a far country, you can come home.

Follow

But then we saw something even more fundamental. The path is not just a set of principles. It’s a person.  Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6 ESV).

You’re not just choosing what to do. You’re choosing who you follow. Not achievement—but trust. Not self-mastery—but relationship.

Become

Over time—you don’t just walk a path. You become the kind of person that path produces. And through faith in Christ—you don’t just improve, you become new: a new person, a new creation.

This is where the difference becomes clear.

The world’s advice says: Fix yourself. Build yourself. Discipline yourself. Become something through effort.

That’s been the message for a long time. From ancient philosophy to modern self-help—it’s all some version of the same idea: “The good life depends on you.” Your strength. Your consistency. Your circumstances. Your ability to get it right.

But the way of Christ says something very different: Follow me. Receive life. Be made new. Become who God created you to be. The world’s way is built on effort. God’s way is built on grace. And here’s why this matters. Because the wrong path doesn’t feel wrong at first.

Scripture says: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” (Proverbs 14:12 ESV) It seems right. It feels normal. It’s what most people are doing. And that’s exactly why it’s so easy to stay on the path that leads to destruction.

But Jesus warns: “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?”(Matthew 16:26 ESV). You can be successful and still be headed in the wrong direction. What a sad day to find yourself at the top of the ladder of success only to discover it was leaning against the wrong wall.

Direction, not intention, determines destination. Every time.

So, this is where everything comes to a point. Jesus doesn’t just describe the two ways. He stands at the intersection, and says: “Follow me.” Not: “Fix yourself first.” Not: “Get your life together.” Not: “Become the right kind of person and then follow.” Just: Follow me.

Like he did with Levi— a man no one expected, no one respected, and no one would have chosen. Jesus said: “Follow me.” And he got up and followed. That’s the moment. That’s where everything changes.

So here’s the question. Not what do you believe. Not what do you intend. Not what system you’re trying next. But, which way are you on? Who are you trusting?

To put it plainly: Who are you following?

Because everyone is following something. A voice. A pattern. A way of seeing the world. And, you don’t just choose a path. You walk it. You follow someone on it. Over time you become the kind of person that path produces.

The path to the flourishing life isn’t something you figure out.  It’s a life you receive as you follow Christ.

I’m Chris

Welcome to Flourishing Life, a space designed to help you pursue the abundant life God offers everyone. Jesus said in John 10:10, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (ESV). I’m convinced God created the world for flourishing human life. However, we’ve all contributed to the brokenness in the world and our own lives. Many don’t even realize a better way is possible. My hope for this blog is that you’ll discover the life God has always intended for you, the ones you love, and the world.
